Before Anesthesia

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight, the night before surgery.  The only exceptions are:
    1. You may drink water but stop at least 4 hours before surgery.
    2. You may take your usual medications or any prescribed medication with sips of water up until 1 hour before surgery.
  • You must take blood pressure medications and any other medications discussed with your surgeon up until one hour before surgery.
  • No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to our office, be available for the consultation with minors, and drive the patient home.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anaesthesia experience and when taking narcotics or sedatives.
  • Please wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow and low-heeled shoes.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry or contact lenses at surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup or nail polish on the day of the surgery.
  • If you have an illness, such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office in advance of surgery.
  • If you have questions, if your health history changes before surgery or you are taking new medications, please notify our office before surgery.
  • Please remember that we have a number of highly specialized people available for the care on your scheduled appointment and if you cannot make your scheduled appointment for whatever reason, we require at least 24 hours notice.
